“I’ve been a professional athlete for over 10 years and competed in 3 Olympic games, winning the European and Commonwealth titles and a World bronze medal in the 110m hurdles.”

My life has always been sports. I had been a professional athlete for over 10 years and competed in 3 Olympic games, winning the European and Commonwealth titles (winning bronzes in the same championships 4 years prior) and a World bronze medal in the 110m hurdles. After the London Olympic Games I had to have 3 bilateral Achilles surgeries and have 7 metal stitches holding one of them together now.  I knew retirement was imminent but I wanted to represent my country once more, so I made the European Championships last year and was made England Captain for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

“ I came up with the idea of training for Miami Pro, and pitched it to my sponsors PhD who loved it! ”

After having led such a regimented training life I found myself slightly lost – I didn’t like being without a fitness target. It was a very unfamiliar and strange feeling for me. I came up with the idea of training for Miami Pro, and pitched it to my sponsors, PhD, who loved it! We put together a plan, and with Chris Spearman as my nutritionist I went about bulking as much as possible.

“ I was hitting the gym twice a day and eating up to 6000+ calories a day, which was a real struggle.”

I was hitting the gym twice a day and eating up to 6000+ calories a day, which was a real struggle. I had competed on the track at around 77kg and my natural body weight was about 80-82, so when I found that with bulking my weight went up massively to almost 97kg (after a few months of stuffing my face with oats, chicken and rice, etc.), I couldn’t wait to start cutting. I was excited to see what was underneath, but once the calories were cut each week I really started to struggle.

The glory of being crowned the Miami Pro Over 35s Universe Champion 2015

“ My brother is a pro muscle model in Australia, so he inspires me, and I love that we have 2 fitness pros in our family. ”

As show time got closer, I became moody and had no energy, which is tough when you have 3 young kids running about. Still, the transformation was unbelievable. I never would have thought that I could get my body into this kind of shape. I vowed that I would never do it again, as it really was brutal, but once being crowned the Miami Pro Over 35s Fitness Model champion and given my MP Pro card, the competitor in me wants to step back on stage to take on other pros and to see how far I can take this new career. My brother is a pro muscle model in Australia, so he inspires me, and I love that we have 2 fitness pros in our family. I never in a million years thought I could go from a pro athlete to a pro fitness model — it blows my mind!
